1914 | T W Gill | Thomas Wood Gill was born in the Newton area of Wakefield and enlisted in the town later in his life. He joined the KOYLI and became Cpl., 10174. He was KIA on 26 August 1914 and is remembered at Le Cateau Military Cemetery. |
1915 | J W Brook | John William Brook was born in Kirkhamgate, the son of widow, Eliza Brook who in 1901 was living at Ramsdens Buildings, Alverthorpe with her 5 children. John enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte., 21056. He was KIA on 16 September 19156 aged 32 and is remembered at Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix. |
G Wood | George was the son of George and Isabella Wood - Isabella being a widow in 1901 when she lived at Soothill with her 3 children. George joined the KOYLI in Wakefield and became Pte., 17540. He was KIA on 27 September 1915 aged 28. He is remembered at Lillers Communal Cemetery. | |
J Ward | Joseph Ward was born in Wakefield and enlisted there. He joined the KOYLI and became Pte., 2396. He was KIA on 18 September 1915 and is remembered at Bard Cottage Cemetery. | |
P Auty | Percy Auty was born in 1883 in Alverthorpe. In the census of 1901 he is living with his mother, Clara and sister Leah and his step father William Balmforth and his family Mount Pleasant, Alverthorpe. Percy enlisted in Wakefield, joining like many others from the area, the KOYLI and became Pte., 21700. He was KIA on 4 October 1915 aged 31, and is remembered on the Loos Memorial. He left a widow, who lived on Jerry Clay Lane, Wrenthorpe. | |
1916 | J Jowett | Joseph enlisted in Wakefield, where he joined the KOYLI as no 4801. He died on 1 June 1916 and is remembered at Aveluy Communal Cemetery Extension, in the Somme region of France. Joseph lies along side 613 casualties, 23 of which are known only unto their God. |
B Ward | Benjamin enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI and became Pte., 17439. He was KIA on 1 July 1916, the first day of the First Battle of The Somme. He is one of over 72000 whose name is etched in stone on the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. | |
H Ramsden | Harold Ramsden was the son of Joseph Saville Ramsden and his wife Sarah Jane. Joseph being a gardener and in 1901 was living with his family at Vine Cottage, Brandy Carr. Harold enlisted at Colsterdale, the village the Leeds Pals enlisted/trained, joining the West Yorkshrie Regt., and served as 15/1102 in the 15th Batt. He was KIA on 20 August 1916 aged 24 and he is remembered at Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg-L'Avoue. By this time his parents were living at Whin Bank, Scarborough. | |
F W Corby | Frederick William Corby was born in 1880 in Durham, the son of John and Elizabeth. He enlisted in Wakefield, while residing at Silcoates View, Kirkhamgate. He joined the RFA and became Gunner L/27604. He died of wounds on 8 October 1916 and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery. | |
F Hartley | Francis enlisted in Leeds, joining the KOYLI as 12937. He was KIA on 1 July 1916, the first day of the First Battle of The Somme. He is one of over 72000 whose name is etched in stone on the Memorial to the Missing at Thiepval. | |

G Mercer | George was the son of Thomas william and Alice who in 1901 were living at Grahams New Row, Kirkhamgate. George enlisted in Leeds where he joined the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders and became S/40263. He was KIA on 14 December 1916 aged 22 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing | |
1917 | C Hopewell | Charles enlisted into the KOYLI as no 201409. He was KIA on 10 March 1917 and is remembered on the Theipval Memorial |
E Calvert | Edgar was the son of Charles and Martha of Jerry Clay Lane. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Northumberland Fusiliers as 21605. He later transferred to the Kings Own Scottish Borderers as 40653. He was KIA on 3 May 1917 and is remembered on the Arras Memorial | |
G Porthouse | George was the son of Mr & Mrs George Porthouse of Brandy Carr. He joined the York and Landaster Regt., as no 241503. He was KIA on 27 November 1917 aged 30 and is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial. | |
1918 | G S Holroyd | George Selwyn Holroyd was the son of Albert and Minnie, being born in 1891 in Sowerby Bridge. By 1901 the family were living at The Mount (near Robin Hood Farm) and Albert was a cattle dealer. George enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as 33249, later transferring to the East Yorkshire Regt., 37308. He was KIA on 22 march 1918 aged 27 and is remembered on the Pozieres Memorial |
W Milner | William was born in Kirkhamgate and enlisted in Leeds where he joined the West Yorkshire Regt., and became Cpl., 306467. He was KIA on 16 April 1918 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial | |

Harry enlisted in Wakefield where he joined the KOYLI and became Pte., 15616. He was KIA on 3 October 1918 and is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial | |
C A Hartley | Charles Arthur Hartley was born in Stanley, Durham. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Northumberland Fusiliers and becoming 50912. He died of wounds on 19 October 1918 and is remembered at Dadizele Communal Cemetery. | |
L Jowett | Lewis was the son of Enoch and Hannah of Grahams New Row, Kirkhamgate, just a few doors away from George Mercer ( see 1916). He enlisted in Wakefield where he joined the RFA as 184927. Later transferring to the DLI and becoming L/Cpl., 44511. He was KIA on 26 Marcy 1918 and is remembered on the Arras Memorial | |
T Yates | Thomas William Edward Yates was born in Leeds, lived in Kirkhamgate and enlisted in Wakefield. He joined the Coldstream Guards and became Pte., 13761. He was KIA on 28 August 1918 and is remembered at Mory Street Military Cemetery, St, Leger. | |
H Pickersgill | Poss : Horace Pickersgill, born in Wakefield and enlisted in Pontefract, where he joined the KOYLI as 52823, later joining the East Yorkshire Regt., as 51312. He was KIA on 29 September 1918 and is remembered at Underhill Farm Cemetery. | |
J H Ainsworth | John Henry Ainsworth was the son of Joseph, a widow, living at Brandy Carr. John was born in Birkenshaw in 1893 and enlisted in Wakefield. He joined the East Yorkshire Regt., as Pte., 39572. He was KIA on 10 October 1918 and is remembered at Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau. | |
P Dickens | Percy was the son of B P and Frances Dickens and native of Roundwood, being born 1896. He enlisted in Ossett, joining the KOYLI as 52817. He died of wounds on 25 October 1918 aged 22 and is remembered at Mont Houn Military Cemetery, Le Treport. | |
A Firth | Asa was born in 1896 in Wakefield. In 1901 he was living with his grandparents Henry and Sarah on Towlerton Lane, Outwood. He enlisted into the West Riding Regt., in Wakefield where he became Pte., 202785. He was KIA on 10 April 1918 and is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial |
